Designing a structure that is resilient requires a strong understanding of material and building science. This course discusses the composition, performance, and application of engineered polymer siding and trim and capped polymer cladding to illustrate the benefits to home and building owners when construction materials are selected with resilience and sustainability in mind. The course will also examine the relationship between a building’s resilience and the safety of the occupants as well as material selection considerations to ensure a structure maintains livable conditions in the event of a destructive weather event.
Course Credits:
This course encourages participants to think outside the box and consider using polymer cladding as a material to create aesthetic, enduring, and moisture resistant rainscreens that will better protect buildings and its occupants. We will discuss other more commonly used products and the issues faced with each. We will also consider life cycle costs of various cladding options, including polymer. Finally, participants will leave with a thorough understanding of how to install polymer extrusions as cladding.

This course explores the evolving role of sustainable materials in decking and exterior building products, focusing on the innovative use of recyclable polymers. Participants will learn how post-consumer plastics like water bottles, bags, and detergent containers are transformed into high-performance building materials that surpass traditional standards for durability and aesthetics. Through an in-depth look at life cycle assessments (LCAs), sustainable materials management (SMM), and advanced manufacturing processes, attendees will gain the knowledge to specify products that support sustainability efforts without sacrificing quality or design flexibility. This new approach to materiality offers a practical path for architects, designers, and builders to create resilient, eco-conscious structures.

In this course, we will familiarize attendees with styles and trends within railing systems and discuss how railing material choices affect safety, appearance, and future maintenance. The design professional will learn about code compliance and how product standardization helps to meet regulatory goals. We will demonstrate how the use of standardized products and processes will help design professionals be able to simplify the development of railing details and master specifications that can be used for a variety of project types.
